Subject:Vocal isolation

I am playing around with making remixes of popular songs,
but in order to do that, I need to isolate the vocals of
the song im remixing (at least to a certain extent, anyway).

Does anyone have any tips for doing this? I've played
around with EQ settings in my audio editor, but it doesn't
seem to do the trick. The biggest problem is that the beat
of the music with the vocals and the beat I'm inserting
don't always line up right.

This may be a stupid question, so please bear with me. I'm
new to this. :-)
