Subject:Specified device is already in use

I get this message when I'm running a software sampler and
try to record into Acid. Does anyone know what I should do
about it?

Be sure that your Multimedia control panel is configured
properly, meaning that it sees your actual sound card and
isn't using "Microsoft Sound Mapper." If you're using ACID
Pro, you'll need to correctly configure Options ->
Preferences -> Audio -> Preferred Audio Device.

Depending on what kind of sound card you have, and how its
own software is set up for routing, this may not be
possible, or you may need to work with the software that
came with the card in order to make sure that it's properly
configured.

When posting these kinds of messages, it's good to be
specific with specifics, such as what kind of soft sampler
you're using, the model and make of the sound card and what
OS you're running.

Thanks Lance,

Here's what I have:

Acid Pro 1.0
Win98
Mellosoftron Demo
SB16 (standard Win98 driver, no Creative Labs software)

Acid Pro 1.0 doesn't refer to a "preferred" device, but
the "default playback device" is the SB16 Wave Out. Under
Advanced Audio Preferences -> General -> Audio Devices are
listed SB16 Wave Out and Microsoft Sound Mapper for
Playback, and SB16 Wave In and MSM for Record.

The only reference I can find to sound mapping in Win98's
settings is under Control Panel -> Multimedia -> Devices,
where the SB16 is listed under "Audio Devices," "Mixer
Devices" and a couple of other headings. There's a "do not
map through this device" check box, but checking it didn't
make any difference.

Am I missing something? Or is my sound card simply too
primitive? If it's the latter, do you have a suggestion for
particular sound cards that are known to work well with
Acid and Sound Forge for this sort of thing?

Thanks again,

Matt Marin

Hi Matt,

I'm not positive about this, but I believe you're getting
that message because you can't have two different
applications accessing the sound card at the same time.
Meaning, your sound card driver is not multi-client. In
order to pull this off, you would probably need to get a
different sound card that provided a multi-client driver.

Best,
Scott
