Subject:sending acid files

I am not sure I understand how to send an acid file. Here
is my problem: My friend and I live in two different
states. We both own our own copy of acid 2.0, and we are
trying to jointly compose a song. For example he will come
up with the first 30 seconds, send that to me, and I would
then tweek that and make it better, and send it back. The
problem is, how do we send these files to each other. It
is understood that we need to save the file as 'embedded
audio', however, when sent via email, the file is way too
large. When posted on a website such as an internet hard
drive like 'idrive.com', when downloaded, an error message
appears "unable to locate file". My question is, how in
the world do you send acid files to another acid user,
without relying on ol' fashion snail mail? Please help, any
insight will be helpful. Thank you.

Jay,

I've done this sucessfuly using "driveway"
(www.driveway.com) but it is very bandwidth intensive.

Save your project with external audio (rather than embedded)
into a project folder (I create one with the same name as
the song.) Upload the whole project folder to driveway
after first creating an account. Your friend should then
download the entire project (hope you both have a fat pipe!)
and your project is then in synch - you could, of course,
do this first step by snail mailing a CD.

After that you should be able to get away with just re-
sending the acd file and any new audio or audio that's
changed. Remember to save with external audio to your
project folder before doing this, or the acd file will
contain embeded links to files which will probably be in
different places on each PC.

Hope this helps.

One more thing to add to what Neil said: if you zip the ACD
file and WAV files using a file compression utility (like
WinZip or PKZip for Windows), you can crunch down the file
size a bit before uploading.

You guys seem very knowlegable when it comes to this, and I
appreciate, unfotunately I am not. Ok...I went to driveway.com after
I save the Acid file as "external'. I tried to upload the folder but it
said I need "web folders" to continue. So I found out how to get
web folders -By getting it from Microsoft Explorer 5 but the problem
is -I dont have that disc. So how do I get web folders. Everytime I
go into my 'add/remove' on my computer to get web folders, it says
insert the explorer disc which I do not have.
I am not even certain that this is something I need (web folders)
but in order to upload a folder, apparently this is required.
Currently, when I try to upload or send an acid file, when opened
on the other end, an error window pops up, "unable to locate
folder".
This is driving us crazy. Please please keep the feedback coming,
I greatly appreciate you help and knowlege!

Hello again Jay,

Try compressing your ACD and related WAV files into
one ZIP file so that everything is nice and neat and you'll
have only one file to upload (and you won't need a folder to do it).
With WinZip, you can zip
everything up so that the person who unzips the file will
automatically have the ACD and WAVs placed into a folder
when extracted. Email or post if you'd like more help on this.

Iacobus

Iacobus, thanks again for your response. I tried what you said and
it worked, unfortunately the song came up in a form that we can not
manipulate (alter the individual tracks of the song). We are trying
to compose a song jointly, a collaboration. When saved as a wav,
it can not be manipulated.
So as far as sending the actual document, how do we send it so
the other person can disect it.

thanx

Hi again Jay,

When collaborating on a project, save the whole project as
an external ACID project.

To do this, go to File>Save As on the menu bar, and then
select, "ACID Project with external audio (*.acd)" under
the "Save as type" option. It should be the second choice.

When saving this way, make sure you save the ACD file in a
folder all by itself, because the ACD *and* the associated
WAVs will be saved in the same folder. Then, zip up the
files as usual.

When your friend opens up the ACD file, he (she?) should
then be able to work with it.

There's one thing I'm not sure of: If you implement
features unique to your version of ACID, is it possible
that can screw things up a little? For example, ACID Pro is
the only version of ACID that has effects envelope
automation. What if one was to give such a project using
the feature to someone that has, say, ACID Music? I don't
really know, but I don't think it would work.

As always, let me know if you need more help.

HTH,
Iacobus
