phase shifting when saving in mp3 -Sound Forge - PC

I am using m-audio preusb as my interface to the computer. my initial takes sound perfect on pb. however when i save it as an mp3 , there is a flanging that takes place on the saved file. This also happens recording a single source in stereo. Obviously I have lost many good takes and have to redo them. I discovered when I save it to a wav file this does not happen and when I save this wav file as a save as an mp3.. its fine this never happened until recently. my hardware has not changed. could there be a corruption in the software? any help is appreciated. thanx
