I *THINK* HD editing was added in version6
TGS wrote on 1/18/2008, 6:21 PM
I don't have Vegas 5, but I doubt you can

Edit: look at the timing on these two answers
Lili wrote on 1/18/2008, 7:10 PM
thanks to you both - looks like it may be time to upgrade soon.

Check under project properties. Try setting the frame size to 1920x1080. If you can do that then you can edit HD. You may not have support for some of the newer HDV codecs, but you will still be able to work with HD.

looks like it may be time to upgrade soon.

Go the B&H route if you're considering this.
Buy Vegas 6 for $79 and the Vegas Pro8 upgrade for $99 for a total of $178.00
You have to install this version of Vegas 6 first (apparently it's a customized serial number version) and then install Vegas Pro 8 over top of this one.
Numerous Vegas users have gone this upgrade route so it does work.

Wait a minute, is the Pro 8 upgrade $99 now?! What happened to the early bird rate, and then it going up?
riredale wrote on 1/19/2008, 11:03 AM
I seem to recall that in V5 you COULD work with m2t files but there were issues. V6 was fine with m2t, but couldn't handle more than a fixed number of m2t clips on the timeline, which I think was something like 85. Playback of m2t material was also labored. In V7 the timeline issue was eliminated and playback rate was much improved, though at the expense of Cineform, for some reason.

Also, working with HDV on the timeline involves an imagespace of 1440x1080, not 1920x1080. But I guess both are called HD.

If she has Vegas 5, does she need Vegas 6 to upgrade?
I thought you could upgrade from any version
rs170a wrote on 1/19/2008, 8:42 PM
TGS, you can upgrade from any version but, by going the B&H route I suggested, you save $57 as the upgrade price from Sony is $235.

So here is a question, how come B&H are able to totally undercut the Sony early uptake price by $36 (I think it was $135 for me), and provide a boxed version?
Tim L wrote on 1/22/2008, 8:40 AM
rs170a: What TGS is saying is that she already has Vegas 5, so she can just buy the $99 upgrade to go from V5 to V8 -- no need to buy V6.

Robert W: In general, any mfr's "direct" price for a product should be higher than any of their legitimate distributors. If we could always buy Vegas or Vegas upgrades cheaper from Sony Creative than from anybody else (apart from the special deals at a new release), why would distributors even bother selling the product. Sony needs to keep their distributors happy.

(I paid $149 for my as-yet-uninstalled V8 upgrade. The $99 price at B&H doesn't bother me much, but I am jealous of the box...)

I have Vegas 5 and called B&H prior to purchase to verify that I qualified for the $99 upgrade and that it would work. They said yes but after receiving my order - it would NOT install. Pop up window appeared saying please install version 7 on this machine first.

Three friends who had version 6 WERE ABLE to install the $99 upgrade.

There is also a sticker on the DVD case that says must have version 6 or 7 installed first. (I called B&H about this and they said go ahead and try to install anyway because Sony probably just ran out of room and didn't list v5 on the label)

B&H later recognized and acknowledged that the upgrade was from very specific previous versions and NOT just ANY previous professional version and we resolved my situation in an amicable manner but they still haven't changed the wording on their website. Safe Harbor also sells upgrades but more often than not they are from specific versions also and not any version as is the norm on the Sony site.

To all that were/are curious about the B&H deal (and why you ran into problems during the install), I refer you back to what I originally said (emphasis added by me).

*******************************
You have to install this version of Vegas 6 first (apparently it's a customized serial number version) and then install Vegas Pro 8 over top of this one.
*******************************
Note that Vegas 8 Pro is probably a customized version as well.

Several users who have done this thinking they could just the Vegas 8 upgrade for $99 ran ran into the same problems as jmeredith.
That's why I put the disclaimer that says you have to buy both versions (6 & 8) from B&H to get it to work.
As to why B&H sales reps still don't have their act together on this, I have no idea.
Forewarned is forearmed :-)

BTW, Safe Harbor wants $299.99 for the V8 Pro upgrade.
Videoguys says $139.95 while supplies last and then it's $239.95
Both vendors say that it requires Vegas 6 or 7 so anyone with Vegas 5 is SOL :-(

I thought I could go from version 5 to the $99 version 8 upgrade because when I asked B&H, they told me I could and I ran into problems during the install because they gave me incorrect information - I really did my due diligence prior to purchase :)

I should also mention that this happened the first 2 weeks in December 07 (prior to your disclaimer) so I am somewhat surprised that the website language hasn't been clarified yet or that you can still call and get a different answer depending upon who you talk to.

Keep in mind that you're talking to sales reps and not NLE experts :-(

It would seem (and I'm sure I've seen posts by people 'confirming' this) that B&H are using a specialised update package...?
rs170a wrote on 1/23/2008, 11:21 AM
Lili , if you buy the upgrade from Sony, you can go direct from 5 to 8.
If you go the B&H route though, you have to get and install 6 and then 8.
Remember, B&H is cheaper too :-)

Kennymusicman, I've seen posts confirming that B&H do indeed have a "special" update package.

Vegas 5 has been working great for me (in the end) and does everything I want it to so I'm very hesitant to upgrade at all unless the HD issue makes it a necessity. I shoot and edit my own stuff with a Sony PD170, but may be getting editng work from video shot with HD - so that would be the only reason I'd abandon 5. I don't think there are any upgrade features I can't live without, at least not that I'm aware of. You know what they say about "if it ain't broke....."
thanks again for all the input:-)

Lili, you can have both Vegas 5 & 8 installed on your system.
They reside in separate folders so there's no conflict.
Which one to use is based on the needs of the project.

edit: if you're still hesitant about doing this, get True Image (from Acronis) and image your system. That way, if you do run into problems, resore it and things will be back to the way they were before the V8 install.
