I'm very new at this and am trying to play a track on my PC and record track and the voice together. Sort of like voice over recordings. Can this be done? I can find any way to play and record at the same time.

SF is kinda "play or record" - so play in something else, and record in SF. Eg, play your source in media player, and record in SF. SF isn't designed to be multitrack (not multichannel - that's different)

No. You have the wrong type of application for that. You need a multi-track DAW like Vegas or Acid, or an equivalent.

Sound Forge has basic mixing... essentially it just lets you mix two files together, and control the volume of one relative to the other.

Obviously you've already got the thing you want to do a voiceover for as a file on your computer. If you record the voiceover as a seperate file, you can mix them together using Sound Forge.... the end result would be kidn of like a multitrack-edited file. Although you don't really have the necessary control for anything really complicated.

He could play the file with WMP while recording the VO, because SF doesn't do that. But the synch between the two clips will be not be solid. Should be near enough on a short script.

But always better to use the appropriate tool for the job. I mean, you CAN write an essay with Excel...
