I'm thinking about buying Soundforge 9. I need to be able to cut/paste across multiple tracks (3 or More). I've looked at the manual and apparently when you cut a section, it leaves a blank the same length as what was cut. I don't understand this. I need to be able to cut and paste in the standard insert fashion. I can do this easily enough in Audacity if I've multitracked (dubbing) in audacity, but I can't import multiple tracks into Audacity. Cubase doesn't seem to offer this kind of editing either.

I record old-time string band music, and I don'y like to punch in to cover mistakes in this style of music. I prefer to just redo a part on the fly and cut it out later, or cut something out and paste it in place of something else. THis keeps the organic, live feel of the music intact.

So, can I cut 3 or more tracks and simultaneously, cut the time out in Soundforge? similarly, can I insert (paste) a cut-out section, as opposed to overwriting? The manual doesn't mention paste at all.

Sound Forge is not a multitrack app.

Not true.

Apparently I misinterpreted the cut function in the pdf manual. I was wrong (a good thing)

I realize now that multichannel files are different than multiple mono (or stereo) tracks.

So, can I import several mono tracks for simultaneous editing?

The thing is, I need to do this kind of editing before I mix tracks, otherwise, if I mix before editing, and then want to remix, I have to do the cut/paste editing all over again. Major pain.

Apparently I can't do this kind of editing in Cubase (I'm thinking of upgrading to C4 essential from LE) either.

SF9 seems to have a lot going for it as a mastering suite, but my first priority right now is to get the kind of raw multi track editing I' need. Any suggestions for a program that will do this?

I think you want a multitrack app. I use SONAR (more often) and Vegas. They both do what you're asking.

Thank you. Clearly, I'm a newbie. I'll probably have to look deeper into Cubase 4's editing capabilities. I am somewhat disappointed, because SF9 sounded like the cat's pajamas, and confused as to why a program that can record and edit up to 32 channels (according to the docs, it can record up to 32 "channels" [I want to say tracks] simultaneously, depending on the sound card's capacity), can't be used to do multi track editing. Remember, I'm talking about SF9. Apparently earlier versions were limited to stereo editing.
