Shall I install 7 or 8?

Hi Guys,

I've been using Vegas since version 5 (Pro) and I always buy the upgrade when it comes out. However, I am usually slow to install the latest version and I have been running V7 despite having V8 on the shelf since release. I've been watching the problems others have been having with V8 on this forum.

Well...I just finished building my new Quad Core machine (Q6600, 4 gig RAM and 1 Terabyte of HD's) and I am in the process of installing a new copy of XP. I like Vegas V7 a lot as it has been totally reliable on my old machine but is it time to install V8? Is V8 as reliable now? I only work in Standard Definition PAL.

I'd value your comments.

Thankyou.

DJ

me- I would say both...

I use V8 very successfully, and virtually never use 7 now - but it has its moments where it's useful to run them both in parallel..

Now there is a thought!

It sounds like there are no issues with having both versions installed?

I've got both V7.0d and V8.0b on two PCs with no problems at all.

always both..
I always start on 7 and do any finishing to utilise V8 features if i need to... (such as MPG2 smartrendering)

Until they sort out V8, its a pretty lil thing to hang onto...
Admittadly i havent had major issues, but im not willing to take a gamble

I use both 7d and 8 too. Did 2 2-cam jobs in 8a actually on my quadcore, both 1 hrs. projects, and no probs at all.

I still use 7.0d, even though I have 8. Just too many problems reported, although it is tough to tell whether this is representative of version 8, or whether the few who have problems are just more apparent. One thing I DO know and that is that if you read back through all the posts on this board going back to version 4 (which is when I started using the product), the word "crash" was seldom mentioned.

I just did a quick review of posts where the subject had any variation of the word crash. There are 2,631 such posts since the beginning of this forum. Approximately 430 of these are since August 30, 2007, when Vegas 8 was released. Most of the crash reports since then seem to be related just to Vegas 8. In the nine months prior to that, many were related to 7.0e, but of those reported with early variations of version 7, almost all of them mention Cineform. For those that don't, HDV is almost always involved. Very few crashes reported with DV.

I looked at a few of the posts from even earlier, going back to Vegas 6, and the still photo problem I mentioned above, was definitely involved in many of those.

Thus, my summary is that if you get Cineform and Vegas installed in the correct order, and if you turn off all your other stuff (anti-virus, etc.), and only use plugins that you purchase (rather than the freebies), and if you stay with 7.0d, I'd be surprised if you have any stability problems.
