Hey folks. Long time user of Sound Forge, bought version 6 back when it was still Sonic Foundry. I was using it on Win98SE then and only rarely had issues. Never had problems on XP either. However, my old studio computer began to act like it was going to die and I decided to get a new one. Having limited choices in that area, I got suckered into buying a new system that had Vista installed on it. I installed my Sonic Foundry programs and discovered, to my horror, that they were all unable to work properly. I'll describe the symptoms here, hopefully one of you will have some insight.

I load Sound Forge, and the splash screen comes up. It initializes, but when it gets to the point of scanning for DirectX plugins, Rundll32.dll crashes. I click "close program" and it keeps going. Runndll32.dll crashes again. I click "close program" again. Now Sound Forge loads and works, with a few weird behaviors, such as not understanding how to list my DirectX plugins and displaying a help menu every time I do "preview." Annoying, but better than nothing.

I told all this to tech support and while they were very polite, all they could offer up was to buy the new version. Well, that's very cute, but I've just installed the demo of version 9, and guess what? It crashes at the DirectX loading screen too, and this time it's a terminal crash. I understand that Vista ruins everything it touches and believe me I hate MS a lot more than Sony right now. Still, I'm glad I didn't give them any money yet.

I'd be fine with just using v6.0 with the clunky workaround, but my audio interface is a Mackie Onyx Satellite which runs via ASIO and that version doesn't understand how to talk to it. It works with Reaper, Tracktion, etc, so I know SF is the weak link. I was expecting v.9.0 to work with the Onyx but I can't get it to load so it remains a mystery.

I also updated to DirectX 9 with no effect. So, I'm out of ideas. If anyone can help me make my computer productive again, I'll be indebted forever. Thanks for reading this far.

News flash - Direct X is at version 10. Try upgrading to that.

Sound Forge 8.0 was released prior to Vista. Officially, Vista is not a supported OS for version 8.0, but you can usually get it to work if you disable DEP as described here.

Sound Forge 9.0 does not use the rundll32 method under Vista. The scan is performed in-proc. Since the crash is now terminal, you likely have a DirectShow filter installed that is not really a transform filter (though it looks like one) crashing when it is enumerated. It was probably also bringing down the Forge 8.0 scan.

To figure out which one it is, look in C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Sony\Sound Forge\9.0\dx_grovel.log.

There's also a free utility on the web called DxMan, I believe at www.analogx.com, that is helpful in tracking this sort of thing down.

Usually, it's some type of converter or filter included with a video packages or an add-on app for certain hardware. And, no, it should not crash the DirectShow filter mapper (an MS component, fwiw) when enumerated.

Thank you for a prompt and detailed answer. I will investigate this method.
