I am getting ready to convert my vinyl to digital. I have an early 80's Sony turntable with a Rolls VP29 phono-amp going to a yet to be determined sound card. I'll be using Sound Forge 9.0e and SoundSoap Pro.

What settings should I use to prepare music for the iPod?
What is a reasonably priced sound card to use for the connection? I'm consdering one of the mid-range X-fi's from Creative.

The way i look at it is, someone far far better at audio mastering than we mortals has already invested a lot of time, effort, and money into getting that recording to sound as good as possible. Why should we mess with it? Record it straight and save it as MP3. That being said, i usually do a noise reduction pass to eliminate some of the vinyl noise, then a slight bit of limiting to get rid of the occasional very loud peak, then normalize to bring the various tracks up to a consistent level.

If you're serious, don't go with Creative. I picked up an M-Audio Transit. This is a pocket sized USB device with stereo analog in and out. It was about $70. The difference between it and the high-end Creative cards is astounding. The noise floor is about -85dB as compared to about -55dB for the Creative stuff.
