DVDA Emergency Help

Derm wrote on 10/29/2008, 5:46 PM
Hi,
Im in a pickle. I have created a DVD with menu in DVDA 5. He wants to duplicate tomorrow. The problem is that when the "remote control"arrow "down & up" buttons are pressed on the preview page, chapters 2, 6, & 8 are skipped. The sequence is as follows
1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10

There are a total of 19 chapters in 2 columns, 1-10 & 11-19

In the second column, 11-19, the up & down buttons work fine.
In all cases the correct chapters playback. What gives? Heeelp!

I'm not an expert in DVDA, but I've had a similar problem. I think my problem was an incorrect sequence, as I recall. So if you can, rename the project so you save the original, and then delete half the chapters and see if you can sort things out. Even eliminate all but 4-5 chapters, and then add them back as things get straightened out.

Worth a try to help figure things out.

Derm,
If I am understanding you correctly, it is only in the menu screen that chapters are skipped?
If that is the case, to the left of the "stage" area, there is a vertical toolbar with four different pointers at the top. Chose the one that say 'navigation tool.'

Then in the stage, all the chapters and menus (and anything navigable) will have arrows coming off the top, bottom, left and right, representing up/down/left/right on your remote. Drag and drop them where you want them to go.

This is a great way to clean up your menus.

Can you post a screenshot of the menu? (Turn on button mask overlays when you take the screenshot.)

I suspect this a matter of positioning. The arrow keys look for the "next" vertically positioned button, but what may look like the "next" button to you may not look like the "next" button to DVDA's preview or to a DVD player. With 2, 6, and 8 just off to one side a little bit (be it the very edge of the button or the center of the button) may cause them to be ignored.

You could do as suggested previously and change the default navigation behavior for each button, but I've a feeling that the default behavior will work if you just reposition the buttons a little. If that will result in a look you don't want, then go for the navigation tool.

In my experience, there is no such thing as an emergency in DVDA.

Take a long breath, and a stiff drink if necessary, and start over with a new DVDA project. At least you will have the opportunity to meet your deadline tonight and learn the workflow tomorrow . . .

You didn't provide much information in your post. However, I'll bet that you have more than one video file in this project. Is that true? If so, then navigation order is determined by:

1. End actions. You have to set this for each and every video file.
2. The "Remote Buttons" Menu settings. This determines what happens when you press the menu button on your remote.
3. The "Order DVD Titles" option, which is found under the File menu.

This last one is the one that most people overlook, and is where I am betting your problem lies.

Another possibility is that your chapter markers are too close together, although you should get a warning from DVD about that.

In re-reading your post, it sounds like perhaps you may instead be simply having a problem with how the remote control navigates among your buttons. That is dirt-simple to fix: just use Navigation Tool in DVDA, click on each button, and drag the little pointers that appear at the four sides of each button so that they connect to the button you want to go to when the left/right/up/down buttons on the remote are pressed.

Arrows, has to be the Arrows! Well, that's where I'd start - plus the stiff drink - Grazie

Thanks everybody for the help, I will try everything listed, except the stiff drink, that might have caused the problem in the first place..
There is only one large MPEG in the project, also as far as I know, everything is within the "Text Safe "area. The issue is only the menu page, all the chapter links are correct. Thanks everybody and if there are any more suggestions Id be delighted to here them.

As I re-read the OP's first post, I think John Meyer may be correct--this is an issue with Navigation between the buttons. Click on one of the menu buttons and then the "Navigation" button in the right side panel of the Button Properties. Set the Left & Right properties such that the menu will flow between the two columns when you use the arrows on the remote control.

If this is the issue, it shouldn't take more than 15 minutes to fix the problem.

Thanks to all who posted - I didin't know about the navigation tool, I had been manually setting the button behavior, which I reckon is more time consuming. RTFM, I guess....
