Subject:Full Duplex Playback and Record

I think most audio cards can do simultaneous playback and recording (full duplex), however, how do I get SF to do this? It works when you are recording, i.e., you can monitor (hear) what you are recording. But how do I playback a file in SF and record at the same time, to another file? Why would I want to do this? I am playing back a file through the sound card, to a hardware sound processing device and I want to record the output of the device, as sent to the inputs of the sound card.

SF was designed as an editor, not a multi-track recorder
Vegas, Acid, PTs or other multi-track software would be more suited for this. You could try the free Audacity which allows overdubbing.
That said, do a search on this forum, there are some work-a-rounds to accomplish this. Kelly?

Yessir? I heard my name?

I you wanna go really cheap ...

Record your first track in SoundForge and save it.
Set your sound card to record "mixed output" or "pc speaker" or "what u hear".
Start recording a new track in SoundForge.
Play back the saved track in Windows Media Player.
Add your new material while the old material is playing.
The new recording will contain both the new material and the old material mixed together.

The Widows sound control mixer will let you choose the relative levels of the two signals. Repeat as many times as necessary. Note though that once you've recorded a new mix there's no way to change the mix except by going back and starting over again.

... or get the appropriate software for the task you want to do. Purchase ( research first !) or download a freebie like Audacity.
