Is it possible for me to record directly from Sonar 8 into Sound Forge 9 in the same computer. In other words start Sonar then Sound Forge recording with the output of Sonar being recorded by Sound Forge 9 ??

Pentium core 2 duo 2.4
4 gigs ram
2+TB of storage
Nvidia 8800 video card
M-audio Delta 66
Sonar 8 latest version

Thanks,
Dan

Yes. If you have a lower end sound card you can set the sound card to record "what u hear", "stereo output", "mixed output", or whatever similar label you can find in the record mixer. If you have a more advanced professional level card you may have to patch the output back into the line input.

Just curious, but why? Can't you save the output of Sonar into a format that Sound Forge or any other software could open directly? That would be a far better solution.

Sonar will save PCM wave, if i recall.

Well, when I'm mixing down the final mix in Sonar,, It has to be recorded someway, other wise it's just playing the mix I hear from my sound out of my M-audio delta 66 and to my mixer. I want to treat sound forge like a mixdown machine, where I can master then record directly to CD. I suppose I could create a loop some way, but I was hoping there was a was to setup and hit play on Sonar, and record in Sound Forge, and wa la, it's a stereo wave which I can then use the master tools in Sound Forge and go directly to CD.

If your sound card is capable of simultaneous record / playback, you should be able to accomplish this.

I gather your wanting to do a real-time mix?

Well, once I get the mix automated in Sonar, I simply want to capture that mix as a stereo wave file in Sound Forge, where I will do the final master mix.

thanks for the help, guys

Once again, why can't you Save As a PCM Wave file in Sonar, and then open that file in Sound Forge?

What are Kelly and I missing?

In SONAR, Edit|Bounce. You can bounce to an external file, or bounce to tracks.

my reply:
Not a thing. I use Sonar 8.3.1 and do all my mixing down to 2 track inside Sonar. If you set the automation controls right inside Sonar for recording the automation, you'll be set to go with a final file just as you like it. And the resultant file can then be 'mastered' inside Soundforge. Here's a hint: don't dither down from 32 bit (which I'm assuming you have Sonar set for) inside Sonar but do it in SF instead.

Thanks guys, I'll go for the mixdown from sonar to pcm or down to 2 tracks.
I'll let you know how it goes.

thanks again

Should work just fine - that's the workflow 99% of users do all the time ;-)

Hi,
I can't just bounce to a final mixed file in Sonar 8 because I have external synths going through my analog Mackie 1604 mixer simultaneously with my internal soft synths. Sounds like maybe you have that too? (internal and external synths).

So, I patch the output of my analog mixer (containg the outputs from my external synths AND the output from my sound card) to the in's of my Sound Card (Gina G3).

I open Sound Forge, hit record, then start playback in Sonar.

I don't know if there's a better way, but this has been working for me since Sonar version 4.

Only hitch with that is that it involves a D->A conversion and then an A->D conversion. That can introduce a lot more noise and distortion.

Seems like a better solution would be to record the analog outputs back into separate new tracks in Sonar. Then when you mix down at least those will be the only tracks that have gone through the double conversion.

What Kelly said.
I do that a LOT with Sonar 8 and my hardware synths - Motif 7, Moog Voyager Rack Mount, Dave Smith Poly Evolver. My sound card (Edirol UA10000) has enough inputs to accomodate everything which feeds right into Sonar. No need to run Sonar's output through the audio again. The only thing to watch out for is that the audio from the external synths will be delayed slightly due to audio latency from the a/d conversion. That can be compensated for inside Sonar.

If I had more external synths then I'd run things through a mixer and then into the Edirol for recording into Sonar.

Some people just need to read the documentation and work through the Sonar tutorials that Cakewalk provides.

"A lot more noise and distortion" ??? Must have a broken sound card.

But Mr OP, why not simply arm anew tracks track in Sonar, and either:
1 - Record the external synths
or
2 - Record the Sonar output plus the midi synths to a new Sonar track .

I'd do '1'.
