Subject:stereo files to multichannel format?

I am trying to convert 2 stereo files (the result of recording with the zoom H2 in 4 channel surround sound) into a multichannel file so that I can route the four separate tracks to different speakers for a Theatre piece. If possible I'd rather do this in Soundforge rather than running from a sequencer. Can anyone tell me if this is possible? I have Soundforge 9.0e. I know if you record into Soundforge using multichannel mode then it's easy to route the outputs - what I can't seem to find in the manual is a way of merging the two stereo files.

Any help would be much appreciated.

1. Load up the two stereo files.
2. Create an (empty) 4-channel file by right-clicking and choosing New...
3. Select the whole of the first stereo file, right-click and choose Copy
4. Select channels 1 and 2 in the empty 4-channel file, right-click and choose Paste
5. Select the whole of the second stereo file, right-click and choose Copy
6. Select channels 3 and 4 in the 4-channel file, right-click and choose Paste

That's how it goes in SF10, at least, but I'm pretty sure it is the same in SF9.

You may need to check that you have the cursor set to the start of the 4-channel file when you paste the audio into channels 3 and 4, to make sure the two parts stay in sync, and you may need to trim some silence off the end of the finished file, but it's really as easy as that.

You could almost certainly also do this with a script, but I don't know of one that does this. Anyone know of one?

Mark

Hi Mark,

Brilliant! I thought it should be easy but overlooked the creation of a new file. Many thanks for your help! That makes life a whole lot easier.

Best, Scott
