Has anybody used Sound Forge Audio Studio 9 in a classroom setting? I am trying to teach the program and am looking for lessons/ideas to use with the class. This is a brand new class and am looking for some specific topics to cover. Thanks

I developed a waveform lab using SF with its nice big displays.
Topic covered included:
Seeing and hearing sine, square, sawtooth waveforms
Frequency change by steps and sweeps
Overtone combinations and cumulative effect -- the "chord of nature"
Phase separation and cancellation
Voice print comparisons (students record the same spoken phrase and compare waveforms)
Is it noise or is it sound? (record classroom chaos - they love this).
Attack and decay (using piano notes, gunshots, etc.)
Comparison of many types of common sounds and waveform characteristics
End with a student-supplied song with Milkdrop vis.

I can probably find some of the original sound clips on my old hard drive if these ideas interest you.

Interesting topics, ,most of which I had not thought of, and I am unsure of myself. How do you go about teaching this to a class? I understand the voice print and that is an interesting idea. We are currently using the effects/processes with a song of their choice to get used to some of the things the program can do. I am a band/choir director with an interest in technology, and am still learning this as well.

The whole concept around the lab, designed for middle-school science, is "Can we see sound? What do different sounds "look" like? What is the difference between sound and noise?" Why do different sounds have unique waverforms?"

As a musician, you should be able to adapt this from what was originally a physics demonstration to a more creative one (I am also a pro musician with college training).

i'll be glad to dig out what's left of the files and send them to you if you wish.

That would be great if you could find some of your old stuff. That would help a lot to see how you approached it. Thanks!
