Vegas Pro 64-bit/Windows 7 - hanging for unknown r

memoir wrote on 12/2/2009, 9:50 AM
I've been troubleshooting for hours to no avail.

I have a simple timeline with Windows Media clips, an mp3 file, some ProTitler events and a PNG file.

WMV files are 640x480, 2Mbps, between 30 and 90+ minutes in length.

I've never had an issue with the above scenario before. But now my program is hanging for an unknown reason. I tried opening the timeline on my XP system and it also hanged there... So I'm thinking it's a corrupt file. If I do nothing for a while the program hangs. Or what was most often happening is when I would undo something or try to delete a clip from timeline it would hang (Not Responding).

I have tried bringing in files one-by-one in hopes of finding a bad one (if that's the case) but haven't had a problem. Not until I bring in all of the files. There just doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason. I've troubleshooted every way I know possible but keep ending up with a hanging timeline.

I uninstalled 9.0C and tried installing 9B. Strangely, at the end of the install the dialog says: "The installation wizard ended prematurely! Your system has not been modified." Yet, I didn't cancel or do anything purposely to cause that. However, 9B did install and gave me the same problems. I reinstalled 9C and got the same installation error.... yet it was installed.

Guess I'll have to see if I can get this done on Final Cut :(. Any ideas on what to look for/try appreciated!

Had this happen to me when installing V9C 64bit on my new system. I had to re-download the app 2x then it installed OK. I had to download the 32bit version 4x. Not sure if it's my ISB (Oceanic Road Runner) or bad error checking. No problems on my new EVGA P55, i7, 8Gig RAM machine, except for the dreaded red frames of death happened once. After reboot it's been OK for now. BTW I am running a high end EVGA SLI graphics card for 3-D graphics apps.

Have you got 9C or B 64bit to reinstall yet? Looks like your system is very much like mine, I've had no problems since installation about 3 weeks ago.

It seems to be installed and does open but it gave me that strange message (both 9B and 9C did the same thing) at the end of the install about it not finishing. Maybe I need to re-download the install file again and start over.

In the end I don't think that would be the problem since the hanging issue also happened in XP. Unless the veg file got corrupted somehow... then maybe. I'll try reinstalling with a new file.

What about special characters in file names? Some of the windows media files I'm using have long file names, with dashes and a couple have amperands "&". I think that used to be an issue. Maybe that's part of the problem? I know I have worked recently with files that had dashes and didn't have a problem. Maybe it's those '&' characters.

I managed to get my video done on XP (in Parallels, no less) yet I still had some issues of hanging... I had to start over but at least I got it output. Perhaps the VEG was corrupted as the original VEG in question wouldn't work on XP either without hanging.

I went through all of the files and removed any spaces or dashes or weird characters. Guess that wasn't an issue.

I still haven't figured out what's going on with my Dell XPS Win 7 system, though. I'm starting to wonder if Sony did much testing on Windows 7 (64-bit) or just assumed it would work fine since it works on Vista. I may have to go back to Vista as I didn't have this issue before upgrading.

As I mentioned I had to start over and used XP. Today I tried firing it up on the Windows 7 machine and the same stuff is still happening.

Also, when I tried AGAIN to reinstall 9.0c I'm still getting the error that it wasn't able to finish, even though the program seems to be installed. Perhaps Sony's uninstall in Windows 7 isn't working right? I say that because upon uninstalling the Vegas icon remains on the deskop as well in the start menu until I remove them manually which doesn't seem right.

Far as install prob only...

Sony uses the dreaded MSI installer [Microsoft Windows' Installer]. This has & can cause problems depending on how the set-up routine was coded, including having separate apps report they need re-installed etc. I've confirmed on my rig that Vegas 9C is a problem child in this respect, & you'll find earlier threads dealing with the C++ runtime file install problems. Generally you have to download, install, & use Microsoft's "Windows Install Cleanup" to remove the records from the offending installation. I'd suggest starting with those for the Microsoft C/C++ runtimes. Of course the only way to un-install an app after removing those records is to re-install it [repair installation?] 1st. My problems showed up in XP Pro SP3 32, while 7 64 worked flawlessly -- it's at least partly dependent on what else you've installed that used the Windows Installer junk.

Since the 9C install worked, even when I got a similar message that it didn't, I neglected removing the records for the runtimes, & it screwed up my graphics driver updates weeks later. Removed the records & install went fine.

Well, thanks. I tried but to no avail.

I'm back on Vista and it's working fine again. What a waste of time (not your solution but the whole upgrade to Win7). Fiasco.

Three main variables: Sony Vegas, Windows 7, Dell XPS 435MT. Which is the culprit? Unfortunately I don't know... but at least I can get back to work now.

It's likely some problem in your registry or possibly some early indication of problems with your system harddrive. Could also be a driver conflict. This problem may even cause your Vista to become unstable at some future point. When time allows, easiest cure is to start with a fresh install of Win7 on a new harddrive and reinstall all software and drivers.

i have the Dell XPS9000 and it is giving me loads of issues with MB Looks. Or at least, I seem to be discovering files created on an MacBook Pro keep crashing the V8 32bit on Win7 ultimate 64bit. The Macbook pro is running a 64bit Vista from Bootcamp and it rocks.

Hello everyone,
Santa might deliver an Alienware i7 920 64-bit machine for me...
I have a Vegas 9 upgrade waiting to get installed...
I'll have to install the original Vegas from which I upgraded, and then install the upgrade.
1 - Does it matter that the original purchase was a 32-bit program, and I now want to install the 64-bit version?
2 - Will it be worth saving the aggravation and simply purchase the full version of V9?
3 - With the recent discussions here, W7 should pose no problems if I use the machine only for video editing and have no other programs installed/running correct?
4 - Once again, will it save any aggravation if I go back to Vista 64-bit?
5 - From the discussions here, either V9B or V9C are 64-bit versions, yes?

Thanks for any feedback...

Until that time... Earl J.

Hello again,
it appears for #5 that each version is capable of 32- or 64-bit operation. Is that correct?
So the version number or letter has nothing to do with 64-bit operation; each version come in 32- and 64-bit flavors... cool... as far as I can tell...

Until that time... Earl J.
