hi, a coupla different topics: 1. Using a gina24 from echo, the audio page will only let me select the windows wave mapper, even though looking at the details list shows all of the various devices. not a huge problem but i'm not sure it's supposed to work this way. 2. after installing win2k on another partition, opening files i had from my previous 98 install would frequently result in a "item not found." error, with no details. when i copied the files to a new directory it seemed to open them without much trouble though. they had been sitting in my win98 acid3.0 folder. 3. is there a way to adjust the start point/offset of a sample graphically like in acid 2 where you could just drag the front part over in the detailed track view? i can't seem to figure out how to do it, other than by adjusting the nubmers, or alt-dragging in the top window, which is a lot less accurate. (of course, i can zoom in like crazy, but typically i have a track selected and in the properties window when i'm doing edits like this anyway) 4.are there any suggested tools for authoring dls files and editing the synths in it? support for this is interesting but it's not clear how these could actually be useful to me, not having seen them anywhere before. i could do sample playback just fine by importing them as one-shots into acid, so what does dls let me do other than using crappy- sounding preset sounds? iany tips on what this stuff is good for are very welcome! i like the idea of having each midi file be kind of like a loop, and think it would be great to get a small grid editor to use to open the files and tweak 'em while the program is still playing.. 5. i'd also really like rewire support :) in fact, the dls stuff would be moot in that case. you could just set up a new track type that would behave like a loop but be getting the audio stream off of rewire.. 6. rex file support would be very nice, as well as a way to quantize audio events around.. cheerio |

#4. There is a lack of a really good tool IMHO, but by far the most powerful is AWave. It supports many formats on import and can convert just about any sample format to DLS 1 or DSL 2 formats. Used in conjunction with Sound Forge for editing, you should be able to create some solid sounds sets. >>support for this is interesting but it's not clear >>how these could actually be useful to >>me, not having seen them anywhere before. Depends on how you work. Using MIDI files to trigger samples gives you a lot of options. The default sound set that Windows provides allows users to play GM authored MIDI files for "remixing". It is only a default. The ability to use any DLS set and then author the MIDI file for the set is a very useful tool. The DLS softsynth is a sample playback engine. With correctly authored MIDI files, you can get some very expressive performances out of it. You can also create use RMID+DLS files. These are files that contain both the MIDI data and the DLS data. ACID will read and load these in. You can also create your own voice mappings to you MIDI file and then do a save from the MIDI track props. This will add a special Meta Event to the MIDI file that ACID uses to load the specified DLS set from that point on. Again, we leave it to the user to find what works for them. Peter |
