This works on my Dell Vista PC with the stock Realtek soundcard. I don't have Win 7 to test.
(IMO, The start menu and control panel is easier to navigate in the classic mode.)

- "Start> Settings> Control Panel> Sound"
- Select "Recording"
- Right-click in the white background area, ( a sub menu should open)
- Select "Show Disabled Devices" The list should have the option: "What you hear"; "Stereo Mix"... or whatever terminology the sound card manufacturer used.)
- Right-click the above and select "Enable" (If not listed, select "Show hidden devices)
Double-click (or right-click) the enabled device to access it's volume fader under the 'Levels' tab.

Use the normal Windows speaker volume control and/or the playback device sub-faders to set the record level in SF.
For future reference, let us know if this works in Win-7.

I was able to see the device but couldn't bring the volume up on that device.

I was able to see the device but couldn't bring the volume up on that device.

Unfortunately, this is a limitation with onboard audio devices on several Vista and W7 computers and notebooks. The Realtek on my Sony Vaio does not expose the wave record controls.

Some people have been able to plug the line out into the mic in and get to work, but by far the best solution would be a different audio interface that exposes the wave recording controls.

EDIT: The workaround I use is the "Disk Writer" I/O in Winamp. It won't write from streaming material, however.

Sorry it didn't work.

"I was able to see the device but couldn't bring the volume up on that device"

I assume you tried double-clicking (or right-click) the device to access the volume fader under the 'Levels' tab. (as it appears on my PC.)

I think I recall a free app. you can get as a work-around. "fraps" or something like that.

A limitation of your soundcard driver.

Try Virtual Audio Cable (google it). Costs though....

I was having the same difficulty.

I followed all the steps listed above, but no success. However, when I did one additional thing, it worked -- I right clicked on the speaker icon in the system tray, selected "volume control options" and checked off all the sound devices.
