Subject:SF 5 - FX & vst plugins suddenly disappear

Running SF 5. Suddenly the DirectX/vst plugin options have disappeared as well as various tools like Acoustic mirror. Haven't encountered this before.

Any ideas why this would be? I've used it for years on various machines, have never encountered this.

Running WinXP Pro.

Thanks

Have you installed and/or uninstalled any other SCS software?
Use XP's system recovery tool. If activated.
I don't recall SF-5 supporting the VST plug-in format. At least w/o a third party wrapper.

Yes, have Vegas 8 installed, but the two were working fine for months. I tried uninstalling Vegas and uninstalling/reinstalling SF but the problem persists.

I've been using VST effects with SF-5 for a long time. They show up under "DirectX" headings.

Assuming no other applications were installed just prior to the problem, and since system recovery is probably not an option, I would uninstall all SCS (and old Sonic Foundry) applications using the (free) Revo uninstall utility, which has options to thoroughly clean files and registry entries left by the normal Windows uninstall method. Reinstall all SCS app.s using the latest build updates. Which there isn't any for SF-5 for some reason.

I don't know why "VSTs" would show up under "DirectX" headings. But I don't think that's relative to the issue.
It's probably neither here-nor-there but can Geoff, Chris or someone concur VST support (without a third party wrapper) was not available prior to SF-7 (or 8) as I recall. ?

Yes, VST FX support was first added in SF8. If VST effects are showing up under DirectX in an earlier version of SF it can only be because they are being wrapped by someVST-to-DirectX wrapper, as you said originally.

Tried the Revo Uninstaller - still having the problem. Something I notice is when loading and it gives these messages of various things it's scanning for, it hangs for some time on "Sonic Foundry Multi-band dynamics" which I don't recall happening before.

Sorry Robert.
If Win XP-sp3 was recently installed, that has been know cause problems with numerous app.s.
If Vegas 8 runs without issue, Upgrade to SF-10, you should be eligible for the upgrade price.. or find a 'used' version of at least SF-8.
In computer years, SF-5 is a dinosaur and as I recollect I wasn't that fond of it. I liked SF 6 & 8. SCS removed some nice features on 9.0 for some reason. 10.0 is multichannel friendly and comes bungled with a lot of nice extras, like Acoustic Mirror, NR-2 and the iZotope mastering plugs and CD Arc. SF-10 can now burn DAO CDs even w/o CDA.
The GUI has basically stayed the same. (at least since SF-4 when I was indoctrinated) or intoxicated.
