Subject:Sound Forge 8 not compatible with Vista 64

I recently upgraded my Sound Forge Studio 8 to Studio 10. Then about two weeks later I came across a "leftover", still sealed, OEM copy of Sound Forge 8 (the 'pro' version) for cheap money. Of course I snapped it up.

Problem is that I can't install it on my new, big, fancy computer because it requires Microsoft Net Framework 1.1 and that is incompatable with Vista 64.

this software has known incompatibility with iis services on this platform

Sony Tech Support says it is "legacy" software and it is too old to give any support, and adds that it is incompatable with Vista 64 (yes, I knew that)

I may be able to install it on another computer running XP, but that's at my job so it won't be useful for actual audio editing. At least, if it installs, I can register and then, at some future time, upgrade to a current version. OR .. (if I can't install it on my XP box) .. anyone know if can I use the serial number for upgrade even if it hasn't been registered with Sony?

No need to install it to register. Under My Account / My Software you can register any serial number belonging to you even if it's never been installed. Assuming it's a legit serial number it would then become eligible for upgrade.

For that matter, registering might not even be necessary. When purchasing the upgrade you can probably enter an unregistered serial number. I don't know for sure as i've never attempted it, but it seems reasonable that as long as that serial number hasn't ever been upgraded before, it shouldn't matter if it's registered.

Almost ... but I can't finish the registration .. see below:

I can't give a computer ID since I can't run the software. I wonder if the computer ID is the same with all other versions of my Sony software, like Vegas? Maybe I can use that?

Rats, just looked at a few different installs. The machine ID format XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-YY has the "X"s the same for every program, but the "Y"s are different.

It's still possible that you don't need to register it to use it for upgrading.

Ok, thanks. I forgot to bring the disk with me today, but next week I'll see if I can install it on this computer (my own, personal, paid for it myself) at work running XP Pro.

If you have a look here you will see instructions on how to get various older versions of Vegas installed and working on Windows7/64.

I don't know for certain, but I would expect that the same approach would also work for getting old versions of Sound Forge installed and working on Vista64. Worth a try anyway.

OK, thanks all. I was able to install it on my computer at work and it registered online with no problem. So this serial number is now in Sony's database under my name.

It's really inconvienient (sp?) to use on this computer. Hmmm I wonder if it was only the 64 bit version of Vista that has a problem. I have a laptop at home with plain Vista Home Basic .. I'll see if I can install it on *that*.

UPDATE: Yes, Sound Forge 8 is compatable with 'regular' Vista Home Basic (yeah :-)) So now I can actually edit at home.
