Subject:Sound Forge XP 4.5 Replacement Disc

Since XP 4.5 is no longer supported, I can't seem to request a replacement disc. Anyone have an extra copy? A downloadable version? I bought the software, have a valid serial number, but don't want to buy new software. I like this version.

Wow, that takes me way back. That was my first Sonic Foundry software. I used it for many years. It got the job done!

However, i would suggest that you might want to consider a newer version. It's cheap to upgrade ($30 or less for the studio version). Heck i'd even go search ebay to see if anyone is selling version 6 for real cheap. Why that version? Because in version 6 non-destructive editing was added. Prior to that, making a cut or an insert required the entire file to be rewritten and was a very slow operation, especially for larger, longer files. Starting with version 6 these edits became nearly instantaneous.

Cutting the recording of our church service down to fit on a CD went from a 2 hour task to about 10 minutes when i upgraded to 6. It was well worth many times the upgrade price.

I got my first Sonic Foundry product free with another purchase. It was XP 4.0. At first I was stymied by the user interface, but my pro audio experience got me through the first few weeks.

Since then, according to my profile, I have ten software purchases registered with Sony (including one I didn't know I had). I guess Sonic Foundry's original marketing scheme worked.

I did download the update, but it's looking for the original installation; the thing I'm missing :(

I'll take a look in the archives when i get home tonight. I may have backed it up on a CD-R somewhere.

In the meantime, you can try this: http://download.sonymediasoftware.com/archive/soundforgexp/ it's 4.5d. Maybe that one will install on it's own, then you can apply the 4.5h update.

There's most likely a registry entry that's looking for the 'disc', try cleaning the registry. "Power Tools lite" is free.
I have a SF4.5 disc (full version) if that would help.. I would give you the ser. # number as well, if SCS would not object.
That said, I would recommend upgrading to a more current version.

Super weird thought here, but what if you try burning the install file to a CD and installing from there?

There's an old, old, old piece of software i still use now and then. It's back from Windows 3 days and was supplied on 6 3.5" floppies. I knew i wouldn't keep the floppies well so i burned them onto a CD-R for safe keeping. But, it won't install without at least floppy #1 in the drive. So if i ever have to install it again i need to find an old 3.5" floppy, copy the disk 1 files from the CD-R to that floppy, and pop it in the drive. I can then run the install on the CD-R and it goes fine. It only briefly looks at the floppy drive (light flickers for an instant), and then happily pulls all 6 disks' worth of install files from the CD drive instead.

It's as if the install program is doing a quick check to see "yep, i see the media i'm expecting" for no necessary reason and then is happy after that. Perhaps the old Sound Forge XP is doing something similar.

But if you look at the files for 4.5 and XP 4.5, you see that they are called "Update." The file size is much smaller than one would expect for the full app.
I think we have become accustomed to having "updates" be full install files, but maybe back in the olden days, Sonic Foundry didn't do things that way. Maybe they released what we called "patches."
That's my guess.

The retail SF 4.5 installation disc with the "Install setup, Manual, Tutorials, Product demos, ect, ect., ect. is 41.1MB.
Sonic Foundry was very efficient writing code i guess, nor do I recall 4.5 ever crashing my PC or freezing. not to mention the toolbar icons were nicer with a real-smooth waveform shuttle at any zoom level.
In addition, Sonic Foundry would actually listen to users, respond to tech support questions addressing the issue instead of a scripted 'one-size-fits-all-answer-of-the-week', and that's only if the customer* is 'lucky' enough not to be ignored all together.
*Customer= Refereed to by SCS as an 'expletive' most likely.
However SCS doesn't have a monopoly on the 'no support' support policy and 'we know better what the users need than they do'. </ end rant >

You should call our sales group and explain your situation.
