I had this same problem a while back. There are a few things that will get your preview screen back.
1) Click on "VIEW" and make sure "Video Preview" is selected.
or...
2) On the right side of the screen....you may have inadvertantly minimized your preview screen.
2a)...in the top left border of the screen there is an "x" and an "arrow" below it......Click on the "arrow."......OR
2b) along the left border of the (minimized) preview window...place your cursor till you get the vertical double lines....and drag the window open.

That was what I had tried after reading the help file.
I did find my problem...I clicked mute video. When I unchecked it I got the video.
