Subject:SF 9 for creating 5.1 and encoding to 2 ch

I've been using SF9 mostly for two-channel work, but got it for eventual multi-track. I do live venue multi-track recording and previously have, and continue to use, Vegas for multitrack (12-16 tracks) post production to CD and some video projects. I've used SF since V 1 :-) I am experimenting with creating a Dolby encoded two-channel file that I can play from CD and that I can send to the Pro Dolby decoder in my somewhat dated amplifier to reconstruct a 5.1 mix. Has anyone had success with creating a 5.1 surround mix in SF 9e and then encoding & saving as a two-track CD with Dolby encoded 5.1 in the two tracks? I also have Vegas Pro 9 if that is needed in the workflow. The budget doesn't have an upgrade for either to 10. Thanks much and Happy New Year to all! Wayne |

Actually, the reality is the opposite of what you want to do. Dolby encoded 5.1 AC3 contains a downmix flag, that when played through analog outptuts on compatible equipment, emulates a nice stereo mix. It shows up in the file as a 2.0 track, but it is virtual. So, Dolby 5.1 plays in stereo through the analog outputs, and 5.1 through optical/SPDIF. A 2.0 Dolby file cannot contain discrete 5.1 information. However, Dolby stereo-encoded material contains the PL II matrix, which can be decoded as psuedo-surround by much of the older equipment in use. Dolby AC3 files are not compliant with audio CDs, although some DVD/CD players may play them. That's an individual player situation. Message last edited on12/30/2010 9:09:40 AM bymusicvid10. |

Have a look at this thread where there is a discussion of how to achieve this (in a non-Dolby-certified way, of course). Mark |
