Subject:Recording with Audiophile 2496?
Posted by: sally_ackerman

Hopefully this is a dumb question: I just installed an Audiophile 2496 and for the life of me I can't figure out how to record without getting the whole mix in the new track???

This isn't a problem in Sonar, just ACID 3...???

Thanks in advance,
Sally

More info: this turns out to be an issue with WDM drivers (which I need in sonar to play sound fonts w/o latency).

Tech support at M-Audio basically said it's up to SF to build support for WDM into ACID in order for the devices to be seen properly. (Then said some pretty nasty things about SF!)

So I guess the real question is: does anyone know if WDM support is coming in SF products??

I was under the assumption that the Audiophile works just fine with ACID.

Did you try setting up the Audiophile as the playback device (Options>Preferences>Audio tab)?

I also yanked this from the Audiophile's manual (p. 13):

"Once the Audiophile 2496 hardware and software drivers are properly installed, the
Audiophile is ready for use with your music application software. Some software
applications may require you to highlight or enable the Audiophile 2496 drivers within
the program in order to use the Audiophile, while others may have a utility that
analyzes or profiles the audio cards in your system and enables the drivers. Your
software should have an audio device driver setup page and if you have problems
locating it you should consult your software’s documentation.
WINDOWS MME AUDIO INPUT DEVICES: All Audiophile 2496 analog and
S/PDIF inputs may be used simultaneously for a total of 4 input channels. Within your
software application(s), the names of the Audiophile 2496 audio input devices are:

PCM In 1/2 Delta-AP
S/PDIF In Delta-AP
Mon.Mixer Delta-AP

“AP” in these names stands for “Audiophile.” The PCM In device allows recording
a stereo stream directly from the analog input pair. The S/PDIF In device allows you
to record a stereo stream directly from the S/PDIF input. The Mon.Mixer device
allows stereo recording from the digital “monitor” mixer built-into the Audiophile.
The audio data recorded from this device is the mix of input and output streams set
up in the Delta Control Panel software’s Monitor Mixer (see ‘Audiophile 2496
Control Panel Software’ section).

Note that all of the input devices are stereo. Your application
software may break these down further to “left” and “right” mono
devices. Therefore you may see them as “Left PCM In 1/2
Delta-AP, Right PCM In 1/2 Delta-AP”, “Left S/PDIF In Delta-AP,
Right S/PDIF In Delta-AP”, or “Left Mon. Mixer Delta-AP, Right
Mon. Mixer Delta-AP,” etc. from within your recording software."

HTH,
Iacobus

Really? What kind of nasty things?

Things that shouldn't be repeated in mixed company :-)

After a fair amount of investigation it looks like WDM is growing to be a painful route.

On a (barely) related note: how do I install the Microsoft softsynth on a Windows ME system?

Audiophile works great -- until you install the WDM drivers -- then it only reports one device (the combined wav out mixer) to Windows.

I thought what I wanted was simple -- I'm looking for alternatives to sonar+livesynth for playing/recording loops based on sound fonts.

I'm open to suggestions/opinions!

I'm the Tech support manager here at Midiman and we do not tell any of our end users that a company is not doing there part in making there products the best they can be. We have weekly (tech meetings) and we always discuss this particular subject and all the techs agree this is pointless and does more harm for all of us.

Thank you for your attention

Well I'm not a liar so one us is having trouble defining what "is" is.

I talked to two tech-support guys. One slammed SF, the other Cakewalk and Win2k. Both had very negative things to say about WDM.

Ta.

Hello,

I just installed the WDM Driver and tried it, and I was able to record in from SP/DIF and have 6 other tracks playing and it only recorded what was coming in through SP/DIF, and no other mix from what was playing. I set my input directly to SP/DIF in, and the outs to Analog out, and another channel to Digital out, and don't record from Monitor Mixer. What are you useing for record input?
