External Blu-Ray

Silverglove wrote on 3/19/2011, 9:17 AM
Hey guys,
Need a burner like right now to burn a BD project for an event tonight and was wondering if anyone could suggest an external that's readily available that plays well with Vegas. I'm running 10 on a 12 core mac pro with no issues whatsoever. Appreciate the help, I;m under the gun. And fyi, tried to burn an avchd file from the timeline but alas the project is too big.
Thanks,
John

I think this may be the problem no one is responding. Not may of us run Vegas on a Mac and would have no idea what hardware would be compatible with a Mac running Windows.

Videoguys.com has a Pioneer BDR-206 Mega Bundle with Media and External USB Enclosure but I have no idea if it will work on a Mac running Windows. You might want to give them a call and ask.

Thank you for the response. Please don't treat the question as if I'm asking for mac support. I probably should have left that part out. I'm running bootcamp and my machine performs just as well if not better than a regular pc. So maybe one can just suggest a external that I can just go out and pick up at a store?
Thanks again

If you need one by tonight, you're best bet might be to go to an Apple Store and ask the sales person whether what they have works with bootcamp. If it does, I'd guess it would probably work with Vegas/DVDA - but who knows.

On the other hand, where do you live? You might give a shout-out on this forum to other Vegas users in your area for some help. If you pack your Vegas/DVDA Project up on a portable drive, someone local might be able to burn it for you.

Good Luck!

PS: My experience is the Blu Ray projects take several hours to render. If you already have it in iso format, that would make things quicker.

Thinking about this some more. You could burn a BD iso image. Copy the image ot a portable drive. Buy a blank BD disc. Take the bundle down to the Apple Store or Best Buy or wherever and tell them if they can burn the iso, you'll buy the drive.

Actually, Apple doesn't support Blu-ray so that would be kind of difficult to do.

? ? ? As in you cannot burn a Blu-Ray disk from an Apple using a genuine Blu-Ray burner and genuine Blu-Ray media? So what do all those iMovie and Final Cut people do with their HD footage when they want to make a hi-def type disk?

I am a PC person. I know very little about Apple. Each week on the boat I meet guests who pooh-pooh PC's, and, of course, have never heard of Vegas. I always assumed they could burn Blu-Ray disks just like a PC, but I guess not?

Regards,

Kimberly

Appreciate all the input guys! I think to make it even easier, how about just a suggestion for a great external burner for a windows machine. Let's take the fact that I'm using a mac out of the equation as my machine running in boot camp performs exactly the same as a win box.

I already did that. Did you go to the Videoguys site? Did you buy the Pioneer BDR-206? Was there something wrong with that recommendation? ('cuz I've been using nothing but Pioneer burners for the last 10 years without any problems)

They buy a 3rd party Blu-ray burners because Apple only ships their hardware with SuperDrives. (which are DVD burners) You can configure a 12 core $5,000 Mac Pro but you can't get it with a Blu-ray burner. Kinda silly.

Good thing to have in my pocket the next time I meet one of those Final Cut people who sniff distainfully at my little Inspiron laptop and say "never heard of it" when I tell them I'm using Vegas Pro : )

I've been using a LG Bluray Burner{Also does Lightscribe DVD} in a external USB case both purchased individually from Newegg for over 2 yrs now without a single problem..carry it with my Dell studio laptop wherever I go..haven't burned a coaster yet.....

I also put my own External Bluray burner together. Bought the enclosure and drive separately. I found an ESata and USB enclosure (5.25") and put in my old Bluray burner. I did that so I could burn Blurays on my Mac and my laptop. works great. Apple doesn't support Bluray, per se, but burning Blurays in toast works fine, but, like all cd/dvd/bluray burning, it takes lots longer on the Mac for some reason. I'm sure you could find a good combo at Newegg, or at a Fry's, if you have one in your neck of the woods.

Hi Silverglove. Go with the Pioneer. Works on my MacBook Pro running windows XP in Parallels. Works equally well on my Toshiba Qosmio running Windows 7. I have DVDA 5.2 on both machines. Hope this helps.
