Play While Recording not working -ACID Product Family

For some reason, although I have the "Play While Recording" option switched on, it only plays about a quarter second's worth of sound before going silent, leaving me with nothing but the sound of my own voice. Now I swear it never used to do that when I was using a very bad mike about three months ago. I have tried this using both headphones and my regular PC speakers: same result. I've even rebooted my PC and the same result. Any thoughts? Is there a another option somewhere I haven't picked up on? Cheers, Darkmonki.
