Well, I'm coming to the source for help. I'm setting up my Acid "workstation", and I'm getting mixed signals from my salesguy and from my sound card rep. I'll be using my family computer to work with Acid, but with some mods that should make a viable compromise. First, I'm getting a secong HDD, a Maxtor ATA100 7200 RPM 40 Gig DiamondMax Plus 45. I will be using this solely for audio, so I'll install Acid, Soundforge, etc. on this drive, along with my loops. The other HDD is also a DiamondMax Plus, but 20 Gig, which I'll use for everything else. The original soundcard is a TurtleBeach Montego Quadzilla, which I'll keep for the family side, and as a midi interface for my keyboard. I've purchased an Echo Mia soundcard for my audio. Here is the part I need help with. My salesguy tells me to just get an adapter to connect my headphones along with my speakers, because with the Mia, it's one or the other. He tells me there won't be a noticeable drop in sound quality, when I use my headphones or my speakers to monitor. The Echo rep tells me to buy a small mixer to connect the phones and the speakers. Which one is right? I work within Acid, Soundforge, etc. I wanted the Mia to have a better sound so I can better make out the effects I've added to tracks. On the one hand, I've spent money to get better sound, I don't want to lose that by going through an adapter. On the other hand, money is getting tight, if you tell me an adapter won't degrade sound quality, it will make my day. The only thing I would be plugging into the mixer would be my headphones, my microphone (Cad 22), and my speakers. My speakers will eventually be Tannoy Reveals. Just to make it interesting, here's another option. I purchase the Samson Servo 120 Amp (60W/Ch), which has a headphone out along with an on/off switch for speakers. Then, later, I buy Tannoy Reveals, but Passive. Amp+ Passive Tannoys= 800$Can. Mixer+Active Tannoys= 1100$Can. Adapter+Active Tannoys= 950$Can. Set-Up Athlon T-Bird 850 Mhz 512 Meg Ram 40 Gig 7200 RPM Maxtor Echo Mia ------------- 20 Gig 7200RPM Maxtor Montego Quadzilla VooDoo3-2000 video card I'll be setting up Windows for 2 different users. You're help is much appreciated. On a separate topic.... Let me express my deepest sympathies to all affected by the terrorist attack on the U.S. I'm Canadian, and I regularly travel to the States for leisure. I've climbed Mt. Washington a few times, gone to the ocean in Maine, and every time I'm greeted with smiles and courtesy. I'm proud to call you neighbour! *******=============== *******=============== *******=============== *******=============== ===================== ===================== ===================== *best I could do. MyST. Later. |

Hello, To answer part of your question, I would install Acid and other programs on the default drive C, and put all your audio on the other drive. And as far as the mixer, thats what I would do, you can pick up a mixer for around $100.00 or a little more, and it will give you more flexability later down the road. See ya, Rockit |
