Subject:Peak Files (.sfk files)

When I open a standard .wav or .mp3 file in Sound Forge 10c, it does not create the peak file (in preferences, I did not direct the program to delete or hide them). Instead I get the normal message saying "Building Peaks for (filename)", but the .sfk file is NOT created and I get an error message saying "an error occurred during the current operation, the reason for this error is undetermined". Even if I open the file a 2nd time, there is no peak file and I get the same error message. I have contacted support, and was asked to reinstall the program using a clean install (wiping out registry entries for Sony), which I did, but this does not resolve the problem. The files playback fine, I just get this annoying error message. Why isn't Sound Forge creating the peak files??? Could it be that I am running it on Windows XP? I plan on running it on a new machine and Windows 7, but that machine won't be built for another week or so.

Thanks in advance if anyone knows about this!

Is your temporary files folder mistakenly set to a ROM drive, (CD or DVD for example) or a drive that is not currently connected.. (thumb or other external drive that was removed)
Access this setting via, "Options> Preferences> General" at bottom of window "Temporary files and record folder" typically set to somewhere in your primary internal HD, (C:) or secondary internal HD.
I don't think the OS version has anything to do with it. It's the same parameters in my XP, Vista and Win 7 PCs.
In addition:
- Confirm that the "Delete temporary files on close" IS NOT check-marked. (Options> Preferences> General)
- When saving, make sure the "Save metadata with file" box IS check-marked. (Save/Save as widow)

Dear rraud,

Thanks for the suggestions. I verified that the temp files folder is on my C drive, where it's supposed to be by default and the other other settings (delete temp files on close, unchecked and save metadata with file, checked) are as you suggested. Still no peak file ;>(

The mystery continues....

The suggestion of a reinstall may have been a bit of overkill
Holding CTRL+SHIFT while starting Sound Forge will restore everything to their default settings.
Running XP is not a factor in your observations.
