Subject:Assigning DLS Banks-Dont work or am I a big jerk?

I tried to assign a personal dls bank using acid 3.0 I use a Montego 2 and an AWE 64 Gold cards(WDM drivers). When I try to assign a dls drumkit i create to use with my midiloops it doesnt work. If I assign just the AWE as master sounds the AWE internal bank. If i assign the Montego sounds the Montego Internal Bank. Even if i load my own DLS. My question is: for which synth this DLS is assigned? Ok ...The answer could be The Microsoft GS Synth. But its not. When I assign the builtin Microsoft DLS synth it always sound the default GS sound bank and I cant load my own drumkit.Even if i load it a lot of times. Surely there is a trick. This function is very important since midi files are lighter and more flexible to manipulate than audiofiles and with good soundbanks you can have great results that are very useful. My problem is just assign my soundbanks. So anyone can help me in decipher to where my dls are going cause if they load they doesnt appear in any module i have disponible on my comp. Thanks very much for any help Walter Júnior Brazil |

Ok Ok We are walking in Acid doesnt accepts DLS 1 or seems so. I can load a bank i made in DLS 2 format. But i have a lot of soundfonts to convert for example. When i convert them using awave they come out of tune. Is there any software that converts soundfonts to a dls format that is totally compatible with Acid?? If it doesnt exists it's time of sonic foundry think about that. Or extend the built in synth support to soundfonts too. I think this is a microsoft question indeed. I know that is impossible convert existing banks to decent DLS 2 format banks. Only if you are at disposal of going to the tedious process of assign the sounds one by one. Its a pity... They create a bank format that no one support and no software converts to correctly. MIDI in Acid turns almost unusable this way... Just my 2 cents Regards Walter Junior Brazil |

Only the DirectMusic Softsynth will utilize DLS files. You do this by routing your MIDI track to the Master (or other Busses). There is a bug in the Microsoft DMusic Softsynth that prevents many DLS 2 files from working correctly. Microsoft is aware of this, but has not yet released a fix. Also, the DLS file and the MIDI file/track that you are associating to it must be compatible. ACID treats all MIDI files as if they are GM authored. If the DLS file you assign has odd mappings, then you will have to manually reassing either the channels or the voices. If the DLS file has Drum kits that are NOT marked as drum kits, then you must reassign your MIDI files drum tracks to a channel other than 10 and also reassign the voice used for that track. Hope this helps Peter |

After a hard working day I confess my guilty :=D Im a big jerk hehehe The midi possibilities are infinity and im still surprised with all I do today. The great problem is still on conversion side. Soundfonts=>DLS for example. I test a lot of ways to convert soundfonts and the best way is using Audio Compositor 4.3. Anyways when it saves the DLS format Acid doesnt accepts the file. The solution is saving in DLS 1 format on AC4.3( since this is the unique that doesnt detune and unassign the original soundfonts samples like Awave do) Then you get the DLS 1 file saved on AC4.3 and convert it to DLS 2 on Awave and it works greatly. I see that Acid can assign different sounds for each track. Then a great tip is duplicate the midi track and soloing channels on each track. In this way you can assign a DLS of a drumkit to channel 10 for example and then assign a new Bass DLS for channel 2 on another track and so. This is a GREAT thing. Acid works like a sampler and the possibility of using DX effects on midi tracks open a new window on Midi edition. I am doing some experience with midi loops and DLS files I am constructing and soon I'll bring access for you all to test them. ACID midi possibilities are not so visible but when you get the way to use them they are surely as revolutionary as the audio features that shocked the world sometimes ago. I am really impressed and want to send my compliments to Sonic Foundry Crew for this great software, really the best of all. To be perfect now just a thing : VSTi & DXi support on midi tracks. If you'll do this guys you'll be my heroes :=D Any chance ??? Thanks very much again My brazilian typical midi loops on Samba,Forró,Baião and Axé will be soon disponible to all with their own original DLS files. I'll comunicate the web adress on this forum. At first they seem very useful and you can tweak in pitch more freely than on audio files since they are MIDI. It's a newborn project but I think people will like it. Regards again and Thanks Sonic Foundry Walter Jr Brazil |

A couple of hidden DLS and MIDI features.... - After you assoicate a MIDI track with a DLS file, you can do a save as from the MIDI Track properties, and the MIDI file will now have a reference to the DLS file. As long as the DLS file and MIDI file are in the same directory, loading the MIDI file will automagically load and associate the DLS file with it. - In Awave you can create what is known as a RMI+DLS file. This is basically a riff file that contains a MIDI file and the DLS file. ACID 3 will load these automagically as well. With a little bit of authoring and tweaking, you can actually create a nice set of reusable MIDI and DLS files for projects. Peter |

Thank you for your efforts on DLS. Questions: 1.If you convert SF2 to DLS1 first, then won't you lose any layers, and filters and 6-stage envelopes, since DLS1 doesn't support these? DLS2 Supports Layers and filters, has a 6-stage envelope and 2 LFO's. 2. Have you found any place that sells DLS2 files? Phil |

How well does it work when you convert SF2's Is it possible to convert AkaiS1000/S5000? Do other multisample formats convert well? Is AWAVE the best converter? What is the best source for DLS files? What is the best source for DLS2 files? These are much better quality since they support filters, layers, 6 stage envelope, 2 LFO's etc. Thanks, Phil |
