Regges, The numbers you are referring to (128, 160, 192) are units that represent Kilobits per second (Kbps). As a general rule, the higher the Kbit number, the higher the quality of the output, since there's more "room" for musical detail. Imagine it like this… You're on a beach and you see a gorgeous sunset (pretend this is your song). It inspires you to the core, and you feel a need to express it in a poem (and MP3 file). Now pretend you've got a dictionary full of words that you can use (your Kbit rate). Now if this is one of those big, gargantuan dictionaries (320 kbps), you're going to be able to express yourself clearly and thoroughly (gorgeous output). Now imagine instead you've got a little pocket dictionary (128 kbps). Sure, it's not quite as thick, but for the average reader (listener), it will be just fine (decent output). Now imagine you've got a Dr. Seuss book. The vocabulary is limited (32 kbps). You're going to have a really hard time doing that sunset justice (icky, shameful audio output). Now of course, if you've only got a few lines to send a telegram or leave a post-it note (sending audio over e-mail), then this might be the best option. You follow? Generally, the more data in a music file, the greater its fidelity. With really high rates, you probably won't notice a difference, either because your sense of hearing isn't acute enough, or because the bitrate exceeds the quality of your samples. Personally, I encode my files at 128 Kbps, and it's fine for casual listening. If your music has a lot of high frequency noise (like cymbals), then bump that rate up between 160 and 192. Any higher, and you won't really be getting any benefit. Cool beans? Hope this helps, Nick LaMartina |
