We just picked up a set of Shure Beta 87 mics for our church. They're
specifically designed for vocals (actually modeled somewhat after the
legendary SM 58), but with some slight tweaks that make them quite
useful all around. They are definately a "close-up" mic though. You'll
want to keep them less than a foot (30cm) away from the instrument.

For a general purpose mic, they're very sturdy, clean, and reliable. If
you can't afford a lot of mics, these are great because you can use them
for almost anything. They're pretty reasonably priced too. I think we got
ours for about $180 each.

A few years back, for my own home studio use, i picked up a bunch of
Shure 16AM mics. They're a budget priced model that runs on an AA
battery for the phantom power. I got them on sale for about $70 each.
Let me tell you though, i've never found anything better for strings!
Absolutely stunning response. They also double for recording large
groups or distance mic'ing. I used 6 of them to record a symphony
performance and the result was delightful.
