SoundForge prevents avi playback

An odd problem. Editing with Vegas Pro 12 I opened SoundForge to play a music track and subsequently no avi file will play in Windows player. Nothing happens. Still OK in Vegas and I can play in SoundForge (not a useful ability) and files will play using Quicktime. Anyone understand what is going on? I've not previously had problems with Vegas and SoundForge, and I might be wrong in my deductions.

When you open the AVI in Media Info, what codec does it list for video and audio?

AVIs can be made up of any of thousands of codecs, and not all of them play well with video editors.

Just had a panic after trying to play an .avi in SF. Failed to open so tried in VP12, again no joy . Then I remembered that my .avi’s were created with cineform which is no longer installed.

Back to VP, loaded an HDV clip .m2t and rendered out to Grassvalley HQ.avi. Brought new .avi into VP and checked audio was OK. Closed VP & opened new avi in SF- again no problem. Closed SF & opened VP. .avi clip played correctly. Added a .wav track in VP, closed VP and opened .wav in SF which played it correctly. Closed SF and opened VP. All tracks played correctly.

Sorry. Not very helpful.

I wasn't very clear in stating the sequence of events. Until last evening I had no trouble playing avi files and to be definitive these are Cineform codecs. After converting a set of camera mp4 clips (EX1) to avi I played them in Windows Media Player (default on clicking). These were loaded into Vegas 12 and edited. During a trial render (to Cineform avi) I searched for music for a test track and when I clicked to play (not in Vegas) the music opened in SoundForge instead of WMP -- OK with me. When I clicked on the test render to play it the WMP window opened but the file didn't play -- no action or indication.
Now my assumption that SoundForge has generated a problem could be quite erroneous. But if anyone has any guidance in solving the issue I will be grateful.

Someone smarter than me will have to come up with the reason why this happened. However, if I were faced with your situation, I'd use "System Restore" to return to how things were a few days ago, before this happened. The problem you are having is exactly what that feature is designed to solve. Hopefully that is still available and is enabled on whatever version of Windows you are using.

Thanks John. You kicked my brain in the right direction. That fixed WMP problem and has revealed another, which is a different puzzle. WMP won't play the avi file I've rendered using the cineform codec (blank screen blank audio), and I cannot see any difference in properties between the cineform avi files it will play and this one. As I said, it will play in Quicktime. I've taken one of the cineform clips and rendered it in Vegas 11, using exactly the same render template (all displayed parameters and codec characteristics) and that file plays in WMP. Not that V12 render is broken, because I've test rendered using other templates. If I render a clip to "new track" using the cineform template, that "new track clip" plays in WMP. Very odd and I'm out of ideas!
