How do you like it???
I was REALLY sold on the DR 60.. then I missed the window for PE3. I just saw the B&H review of DR40. Seems nice. They didn't get into audio quality. It seems like a better deal than the 60 because of the built in mics and flexiblity (but.. you know how you get your mind SET on something .. and it overrules logic ?? lol that's how I feel about the DR60). WIth the DR60 I'd still need mics. With the 40 I would probably still get a set of stereo mics to add on.. but don't NEED them.
Honestly, I'm more in it for the PE3. It's kind of like getting the Tascam free. I use a Zoom H1 now. It's nice, but not as nice as the Tascam. And it's built a bit flimsy.
Actually, I've mentioned the problems a couple times to their support ppl - they seem to be totally unaware of the problems with Vegas - and I would guess are not too interested in exploring the issues.
I bought a DR-40 and sold it without ever using it (other than to test). Mic preamps didn't provide sufficient gain and were noisy when pushed. The headphone/line output to the camera was also very noisy, though not an issue if you use the audio from the DR-40 SD card.
I ended up buying a zoom H4, which feels more cheaply built but has better preamps.
I'm very disappointed w/ PE3. Though they fixed the basic inoperability w/ the patch, it still says that it doesn't recognize the audio from some video clips. I use PE2 and everything syncs up fine. It's obvious customer service has gone down hill since they've been gobbled up by Dead Giant... typical. (:
I'm trying to get in on the 'free' Plural Eyes deal. I missed it with the DR60, and while it's a nice unit, I see the DR 40 is a better value (for me) with built in mics. And now it has me wondering.......if I wait will there be a better deal next month... or no deal at all and I've missed the boat.
FYI, if anyone's interested, I picked up the DR40 and used it to recorded my friend's drums in this video. The DR40 was on top of the kit (you can see it in some of the shots) to capture the cymbals, snare and toms. I had an SM57 on the kick ch3 and guitar was DI'd into the DR40 XLR ch4.
Sorry guys, the video is more crappy than my normal crappy videos (compared to your guy's vids) as the gig was REALLY dark, I even upped the levels, but as you can see the color and details (Sanyo FH1A angles) are a little washed out. But I primarily wanted to work w/ the DR40's audio anyway.
The piano audio is weak because I had to use the audio from a Kodak Playsport which was positioned next to the piano. The video from the Playsport was useless due to the low light. (The TM700 low light performance was very good imho.)
All the audio was post mixed in Cubase 6. The highs had to be tamed down a bit, a low end boost to the SM57 kick mic as it starts to roll off at 40Hz and Final EQ in Vegas.
A Roland R09 recorded the front of the band to pick up the sax and trumpet.
Audio from the cameras were not used, except the Playsport .
Anyway, here's the DR40 video, pls play in 720p for better audio.
