thanks chienworks, i can see the marker in the recording volume fluctuating and when recoding i can hear noise, but the level is so low on the playback that i have to turn up my speakers in order to hear what i recorded, so low in fact that it gets drowned out when playing the loops to add to the vocals. i took your advice and then i went into show the following controls and only selected mic so now i only have a mic display. is there any device that should be unselected in the playback window? or should something be muted or turned up?, to get my recording to playback at normal or high playback volume?

I want to help with your problem. If I'm understanding this correctly your trying to record but havent figured out how to get the playback volume to a decent level without all the noise. Try this. Go into volume controls, under volume controls you can access volume and recording. Under the volume header find the mic and mute it. Then go to the recording section and make sure that both the mic and wave controls are accessible. Make sure both are not muted and have them both set at a midway point on the scale. Hopefully that would solve your problems. Also I just remebered when recording sounds turn the wave controls down(volume only not recording). What happens is you get feedback from the sound being up so high, it wouldn't hurt to also turn the volume down as well. Let me know what happens
