Reading these posts (via the search function) has really turned me against Acid, especially the long one about one-shot loops not running from RAM. Now excuse my ignorance, but isn't it true that:

- you can designate ANY part as a loop and therefore it will play from RAM
- if your machine begins to choke you can just bounce tracks together
- Acidpro 3 should run like fury with more long tracks than any sane composer would ever use on any dedicated DAW above 1GHz with 512Mb RAM ?

I appreciate any answer from Acid veterans as some of the posts here are making me very nervous about buying....

One-shots run from RAM only if they are at or shorter than 3 seconds.

-Yes. Any Loop type of track will always play from RAM. You can always, say, switch a Beatmapped track to a Loop type track, but be aware of the RAM consumption. A typical 3 minute snippet of audio set as a Loop can take a nice chunk of RAM, say around 50 MB. That's roughly 10% of your installed RAM right there.

-Yes. Try not to go above 4 Beatmapped tracks if possible. Hard drives can only go so fast.

-Yes.

Have you tried the demo yet? You'll get a good idea on ACID's performance and be able to judge for yourself.

I have tried the demo, but only with my old and sad PC which is not a good test. I'm about to get a new DAW PC and would like to get everything at once :) - new PC and software.

I suppose my question really is whether I should run everything through VST, Nuendo or Acid. I much prefer Acid for its speed, price and user friendliness, but I'm worried that it'll run out of grunt when I need it most...

Nice system - especially those screens :)

I intend to get a P4 1.8GHz i850 266MHz 512Mb SDRAM

After reading all these posts I thought I might save up for the new VST instead... but I do love the feel of AcidPro - so fast and easy. I'll also keep doing all my mixing and effects in Pulsar (a beautiful system).

Now I don't know what to do again...

Keep this in mind ... all the perceived performance difficulties that you're concerned about apply only to previewing projects. You can render 10,000 tracks on a 16MHz machine (well, maybe not because a 286 machine won't have MMX and therefore won't run DirectX, but the principle remains ...) and end up with perfect output. If you need to hear a section of a complex project as it will be when finally rendered, you can highlight a small section and do a "Dynamic RAM Preview" to hear that section. This usually only takes a few seconds.

I've created 30 track projects on a 333MHz AMD K6/2 and had previews that ran quite well with very little skipping.
