winME vs win98SE and soundcard configuration -ACID Product Family

I have tried the same recording methods with my new HP Pavilion winME using the onboard crystal sound card and I am not able to get a good input signal. I bought a Sound Blaster card in an attempt to solve this problem, but I still can't get a good signal. The input level wont go above -15 dB and the recorded wave is compressed, showing nearly no peaks and valleys. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get my new machine to work? I'm afraid that it's a simple software/ hardware mis-configuration. Any suggestions?
