i was having a hang up problem along with a bunch of other things so i reinstalled my 98se OS yesterday. everything works well except when i hit FILE OPEN,it just hangs and states (not responding) when i go to end task.

i use Acid 3.0f
600mhz pentium 3
640 mg ram
lexicon core 2
SAF Cd-rw

is this just a problem with Explorer?

is that 640Mb of RAM under 98SE ? Win98 doesn't support more than 512Mb without some serious tweaking....

OH s**t,
i didn't know that. seems to work fine though. i never had to tweek anything before.
problem started last week not being able to open new songs folder(holds acd. files)
now that i reinstalled the OS it won't let me get past FILE OPEN.
i can open acd. files other ways but not with FILE OPEN.

this is the first time i've heard anything about the 640mg ram thang.

what type of problems should i be looking for???

Untweaked Win98 with more than 512Mb RAM becomes unstable. Here's a mention of the problem, but you'' find mention of it many places. Search on Google.
http://www.ivnet.com/512mb_max.htm

You can use more, but you must tweak your machine:
http://cweb.msi.com.tw/eforum/index.php?target=article&tid=5055personally this looks like hard work to me for just another 100Mb or so of RAM - I wouldn't bother. Go back to 512Mb of RAM and see how your system perorms...

However, here is one person's advice (NOT mine) on the 98 RAM problem:

The 9x bug is a non issue... It's just an overflow that they didn't spot (who would in 1995...?). If you haven't specified a VCACHE size, VCACHE (windows 9X's disk cache module) automatically sets itself to a sensible value. Unless you've got too much ram, in which case it overflows and takes up the entire physical memory. Meaning no space for apps. D'oh! (98 onwards is still usable to an extent, as properly WINALIGNed apps can run out of VCACHE. They still need to allocate heap though, so you're probably still looking at crash and burn...)

So set the VCACHE with system.ini:

[vcache]
MinFileCache=size in k
MaxFileCache=size in k
