Subject:OT- Carpeting or Hardwood?

I will be buying a house in the next few months and will finally have a dedicated room for my PC.
Since I mostly play with audio software (Acid and Vegas), would you recommend carpeting or a hardwood floor for better accoustics?
I never studied in this area, so any/all help would be appreciated.
I was leaning towards hardwood with an area rug. The rug should cut down on echoing. I don't have a budget for professional accoustic insulation, nor do I think I need the overkill since I'm only a hobbyist.

Thanks in advance.

MyST,

Regardless if you're going to be editing, recording, or performing in this room, hardwood will give you more versatility, since it's a whole lot more practical to deaden a live room than liven a dead room. So I'd go hardwood and invest in a nice big rug (go to a carpet store and ask to buy some returned merchandise), and a couple push-curtains for the walls. It's a real cheap way to make your own recital hall. This way, if you're doing classical stuff (which needs some echo/reverb coloration) or vocal performance (without monitors), you could leave the walls bare and the floor clean. This will give the room a nice, close, live feel. Got a contemporary group coming in? Don't want the transients to get buried in reverb? Roll out the rug and draw the curtains. Tada... Dead room. Also, mix and match if it tickles your fancy. (Note that you could also attach some blankets to the walls instead of curtains. Then just roll them up and fasten in place to make the room live again.)

Just a couple thoughts,
Nick LaMartina

There's the decision maker I was looking for!
Thanks much for the help!
